The Shifting Sands

Commerce and Candor

Great House: Vessarn

Founded 1592BDA

Testimony

“I thought I knew trade — tariffs, contracts, stamped seals. In the Sands, the real agreements never touch parchment. They’re spoken in shadow, sealed with a glance, and honored… or ended… before sunrise.”
— Marrec Dovan, Spice Merchant of the Azure Coast

About

The Shifting Sands stretch across the southern reaches of Elaros in a vast expanse of golden dunes, wind-carved ridges, and sun-scorched stone. By day, the desert blazes beneath an unforgiving sky; by night, it cools into a sea of silver under the stars. Life here clings to oases, fortified caravan cities, and coastal strongholds where trade routes converge like lifelines across the sand. The people of the Sands are hardened by heat and scarcity, valuing resilience, cunning, and strength above all else. Beneath the beauty of rolling dunes lies a land of hidden routes, ancient ruins swallowed by time, and quiet power that moves as subtly — and as relentlessly — as the wind itself.

Landmarks

Ashmar

Ancestral Seat of House Vessarn
City of Hushed Tones

Ashmar, seat of House Vessarn, rises in pale limestone splendor along the final bend of the Red River, its domes and minarets glowing gold beneath the desert sun. Known as the City of Hushed Tones, it is a place where conversation rarely means what it sounds like and every smile conceals a second intention. Schemes move more swiftly than caravans, and influence is traded as carefully as coin. Though underground dealings are rampant and political maneuvering constant, the streets themselves remain immaculate — crime is rare, and those foolish enough to disrupt the order are hunted down with ruthless efficiency. Ashmar is beautiful, disciplined, and dangerous — a city where power is not shouted, but whispered.

Tesserath

Precursor Ruin
Great Mystery of Elaros

Tesserath stands half-buried in the western reaches of the Shifting Sands — a colossal ruin of impossible geometry and alien design that predates every recorded civilization in Elaros. Its towering arches and seamless stone corridors bear no chisel marks, no script the scholars can translate, and no clear sign of decay despite the ages. Once a thriving precursor metropolis, its people vanished in a single, unrecorded event, leaving behind vast chambers, strange mechanisms, and a silence that unsettles even the boldest explorers. The desert has reclaimed much of it, but entire districts still lie intact beneath the dunes, whispering of knowledge that should not exist. Many have tried to settle Tesserath over the centuries. None have succeeded. The city does not collapse — it endures, waiting, as though it expects something… or someone… to return.

Fort Senakra

Crucial Town for Trade
The Mouth of the Sands

Fort Senakra stands at the edge of sea and sand, a sprawling stronghold known as the Mouth of the Sands. Part fortress, part naval yard, part thriving town, it serves as the primary artery through which nearly half of the region’s trade flows. Warships and merchant vessels crowd its harbors, while caravans from the interior converge upon its gates in a constant exchange of goods and coin. Only Ashmar rivals its importance. Senakra’s culture is built on commerce — bold, competitive, and richly flavored by the spices that move through its docks in staggering volume. Yet beneath the banners and bustling markets, shadow networks quietly manage lucrative spice-running operations that ensure the city’s influence extends far beyond what is recorded in ledgers.
